Boswellia Serrata: Improvements in Pain, Stiffness and Ability to Perform Daily Activities Last Longer than NSAID

In a controlled study of 66 patients with osteo arthritis of the knee aged between 40-70, scientists at the Government Medical College of Nagpur India compared the efficacy of Boswellia serrata to a common NSAID drug. The scientists found that patients had significant improvement in pain, stiffness and ability to perform daily activities after taking 1g/day of Boswellia serrata over a two month period and continued to have positive effects even after they stopped taking Boswellia serrata.

Patients taking the NSAID had improvements after 1 month, but those improvements stopped as soon as they stopped taking the drug. This lead the team of scientists to conclude that “Boswellia serrata showed a slower onset of action but the effect persisted even after stopping therapy while the action of the NSAID became evident faster but waned rapidly after stopping the treatment.”
