Cholesterol is an important raw material that the body uses to build cells. However, when levels of cholesterol get too high, it can lead to fatty buildups along artery walls increasing the risk of heart disease.
Treatments to help reduce cholesterol may include dietary and lifestyle changes. Sometimes prescription drugs are prescribed.
Several clinical studies have suggested that Aloe vera supplementation can have a beneficial effect on cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
A recent double blind animal study at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Korea was performed to analyze the potential impact of Aloe vera supplementation over an extended life period, specifically with respect to enhancing antioxidant activity and cholesterol levels. As with many functions in the body, both of these change in a negative way as we age.
The results were fairly amazing. The test group that received Aloe vera supplementation ended the study with an LDL cholesterol level that was 30% less than the control, or placebo, group. Also, the group taking the Aloe vera had significantly higher levels of the antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD) and exhibited overall superior protection against free radical oxidative damage.
This led the study authors to conclude that “life-long dietary Aloe supplementation suppresses free radical induced oxidative damage and age related increases in hepatic cholesterol” (1) Obviously, additional study is needed, but this study again demonstrates the power of Aloe Vera.
