Do you enjoy a cup or two of coffee during the day? You may be doing your health a favor, as a recent study from the Harvard School of Public Health shows that four cups of coffee a day may significantly reduce the risk of endometrial cancer (cancer of the womb).
The findings were published online ahead of print on November 22, 2011, in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
The researchers examined data from the Nurses’ Health Study, which included 67,470 women, 672 of whom had documented cases of endometrial cancer. The study followed the women for 26 years.
Women who consumed four or more cups of coffee daily had a 25% lower risk of developing endometrial cancer than those who consumed less than 1 cup per day. Consumption of 2 or more cups of decaffeinated coffee daily was found to reduce the risk by 22%, when compared to consumption of less than 1 cup per month. No such reduction was association with tea consumption.
The researchers believe that these effects are a result of coffee’s protective effects against cancers linked to insulin, such as colon, liver, breast and prostate cancer. They warn that adding a lot of sugar and milk to your coffee can reverse the positive effects discovered here.
Coffee has been linked with numerous health benefits, including reducing the risk of developing diabetes, prostate cancer, cirrhosis, liver disease and oral cavities. Additionally, over half a dozen different studies have also shown that people who drink coffee regularly are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease. These benefits are generally attributed to the powerful antioxidants found in coffee called polyphenols.
