Antioxidant Supplements May Help Certain Groups With Healthy Aging

Intervention trials using dietary antioxidant supplements have often yielded conflicting results. Now a recent study has found that certain sub-groups of the population may benefit from taking antioxidant supplements in order to support healthy aging.


For this study, researchers looked at data from the Supplementation with Antioxidant Vitamins and Minerals Study, which took place between 1994 and 2002 and included 3,966 participants with a mean age of 65.3.


Initially, the researchers found that antioxidant supplementation did not have any significant benefits. However, when they adjusted for gender they found that men had a higher probability of healthy aging when they took antioxidant supplements.


Additionally, both men and women who had low vitamin C levels at the onset of the study, men with low zinc levels, and men who ate fewer than five portions per day of fruits and vegetables all benefited from taking antioxidant supplements.


Finally, women with low vitamin C concentrations were more greatly affected by the antioxidant supplements than men with similar levels. However, there weren’t many women with low vitamin C levels included in the cohort, making it hard for the researchers to draw a definitive conclusion regarding the effects of antioxidant supplementation on women and aging.


The researchers suggest that consuming a varied and well-balanced diet consisting both of fruits and vegetables and antioxidant supplements may be the optimal course to follow for healthy aging.


Researchers from Université Paris 13 in France conducted the study. It was published online ahead of print on September 15, 2015 in The American Journal of Epidemiology.


The antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables have been linked with healthier looking skin, heart health benefits and healthier levels of cholesterol. This is often attributed to the ability of antioxidants to fight free radicals in the body.


Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet can be as simple as grabbing an apple as a snack or making sure you have a fruit or vegetable at every meal. Additionally, if you’re looking to boost your antioxidant intake, consider taking a high quality supplement.
