Arginine Silicate May Be Best Form of Arginine For Increasing Plasma Arginine Levels
Arginine is an amino acid that is necessary for the body to produce nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow. A recent study suggests that taking inositol-stabilized arginine silicate supplements may be more effective than arginine hydrochloride supplements at increasing plasma arginine levels.
Participants in the study included 20 healthy men who took 500 mg of arginine silicate or 500 mg of arginine hydrochloride daily for 14 days. The first intervention period was followed by a seven-day washout period, after which the men took the other intervention for 14 days.
At the conclusion of the study, the researchers noted that the arginine silicate supplement significantly increased plasma arginine levels for up to six hours after the dose was administered. In comparison, the arginine hydrochloride supplement online increased levels for only one hour post-dose.
Additionally, the arginine silicate supplement was associated with a more than 70% increase in plasma levels as well as a lower standard deviation when compared with the arginine hydrochloride.
Researchers from Nutrition 21 conducted the study. It was published in the April 2016 issue of The FASEB Journal.
In the body, arginine changes into nitric acid. It has been shown in previous studies to help with cardiovascular health and lower blood pressure. It can be found in gelatin, chocolate, carob, coconut, oats, whole wheat flour, soybeans, and wheatgerm.
