Ashwagandha May Help Boost Immune System

Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. The roots and leaves have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A new study has found that Ashwagandha extract may help boost the immune system.

24 adults between the ages of 45 and 72 participated in the study. Half of them were given 60 mg of Ashwagandha extract daily for 60 days. The other half were given a placebo for 30 days and then 60 mg of Ashwagandha extract for 30 days. Blood samples were taken at baseline, day 30, and day 60.

Participants in the Ashwagandha group saw significant increases in their levels of antibodies and cytokines by day 30. Participants in the placebo/Ashwagandha group saw significant increases in their levels of antibodies and cytokines after they switched to taking the Ashwagandha extract. Cytokines play a vital role in regulating the immune system.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and Christian Medical College. It was published online ahead of print on August 18, 2021 in the journal Nutrients.
