Ashwagandha Root May Help Male Fertility Problems
Ashwagandha root has been used in traditional Indian medicine to treat male fertility problems for hundreds of years. A recent pilot study sought to verify this, and found that supplementation with Ashwagandha root extract may increase testosterone production and other metrics of male sexual health.
Participants in the study included 46 men with low sperm count. They were given either 675 mg per day of full spectrum Ashwagandha root extract in three doses or a placebo for 90 days.
At the conclusion of the study, the Ashwangandha root group showed a 167% increase in sperm count, a 53% increase in semen volume, a 57% increase in sperm motility, and a 17% increase in testosterone levels when compared with baseline. The placebo group showed no such improvements.
Researchers from Mahalaxmi Clinic and a variety of other Indian institutions conducted the study. It was published in the 2013 volume of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Previous studies suggest that ashwagandha may help with memory, cognitive function and brain health, increase strength, and help with sexual dysfunctions. The best way to consume ashwagandha is by taking a high quality supplement.
