Ashwagandha Root May Help Relieve Some Perimenopause Symptoms
Perimenopause occurs when the body begins transitioning into menopause, usually when women are in their 40’s. Symptoms can include irregular periods, hot flashes, insomnia, mood changes, and bladder problems. A new study has found that Ashwagandha root extract may help alleviate some perimenopause symptoms.
Ninety-one women with symptoms related to perimenopause participated in the study. They were given 600 mg of Ashwagandha root extract or a placebo daily for 8 weeks. The researchers used the menopause rating scale, menopause-specific quality of life, and the hot flash score to evaluate symptoms at baseline and at the end of the study period. They also measured hormonal changes.
Participants in the Ashwagandha group saw significant reductions in scores on the menopause rating scale, including a significant reduction in the number of hot flashes. In addition, they saw serum estradiol levels return to normal. Serum estradiol levels decline during perimenopause and menopause.
The study was published online ahead of print on September 22, 2021, in The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Research.
