Ashwagandha Root May Improve Cardiovascular Endurance During Exercise

Improved cardiorespiratory endurance allows a person to exercise longer. A recent study suggests that taking supplements of Ashwagandha root extract may improve endurance during exercise as well as improve quality of life.


Participants in the study included 50 healthy adults who were given either a placebo or 600 mg of Ashwagandha root extract daily for 12 weeks. The researchers administered 20 minute cardiorespiratory endurance shuttle run rests, measuring oxygen consumption at the beginning of the study, , and at peak physical exertion during the shuttle run test at the eight week mark and at the end of the study period. The World Health Organization self-reported quality of life questionnaire was used to assess quality of life of the participants.


At the conclusion of the study, the researchers found that the Ashwagandha root group had greater increases in oxygen consumption at peak physical exertion than the placebo group at both the eight week mark and the end of the study. They also had statistically significant improvements in quality of life — particularly in physical health, psychological health, and social interactions — when compared with the placebo.


Researchers from the Hyderabad Spine Clinic, Zela Life Health Center, and BVDU Dental College and Hospital conducted the study. It was published in the January-March 2015 issue of AYU.


Previous studies suggest that Ashwagandha may help imrpove memory, cognitive function and brain health, increase strength, and help with sexual dysfunctions. The best way to consume Ashwagandha is by taking a high quality supplement.
