Bacopa Monnieri May Help Improve Cognitive Function in Children
Bacopa monnieri, also known as brahmi, is an herb that has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. A recent study has found that bacopa monnieri extract may help improve cognitive function and sleep in children.
Participants in the study included 112 boys between the ages of 6 and 14. Half were given between 160 and 320 mg daily of bacopa monnieri extract for 14 weeks, depending on their weight. The rest were given a placebo. The researchers evaluated cognitive function, executive function, sleep quality, and mood at baseline and at the end of the study period.
Participants in the supplement group saw decreased error-making and increased speed of reaction time at the end of the study, compared to placebo. They also saw improvements in cognitive flexibility, executive functioning, interpersonal interactions, and sleep quality.
The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Melbourne. It was published online ahead of print on January 18, 2022 in the journal Phytotherapy Research.Bacopa monnieri has also been found to improve cognitive function and learning in adults
