Black Cumin Oil May Help Improve Sleep Quality

Black cumin oil is extracted from the seeds of Nigella sativa, a plant native to southwest Asia. A recent study suggests that supplementation with black cumin oil may help improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety and stress.

Fifteen adults with significant sleep problems participated in the study. They were given 200 mg of black cumin oil daily for 28 days. The researchers administered a sleep study at baseline and at day 7 to assess sleep quality, sleep efficiency, and sleep latency. They also measured levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Participants completed a questionnaire at baseline and at the end of the study period to evaluate sleep quality, anxiety, and stress.

Participants saw a 29.38% increase in REM sleep and an 82.49% increase in Non-REM sleep. Time to fall asleep decreased from 27 minutes at baseline to 20 minutes at the end of the study.

Participants also reported significant decreases in stress and anxiety and saw significant reductions in levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

The study was conducted by researchers from Mahatma Gandhi University and Cochin University of Science & Technology. It was published online ahead of print on January 24, 2022 in the Journal of Herbal Medicine..

According to a previous study, black cumin oil may also help support blood sugar health.
