Chromium Picolinate May Help People Lose Weight Without Losing Lean Body Mass

People who lose weight often also lose lean body mass. Lean body mass loss has been linked with declines in neuromuscular function and increased risk of injury. A recent study suggests that the trace mineral chromium picolinate may help people preserve lean body mass while they are losing weight.


For this review, researchers examined studies that looked at how chromium picolinate supplementation affected changes in body composition, as well as studies that looked at the same effects from green tea catechin, soluble fiber complex, Garcinia cambogia, and Irvingia gabonesis.


Of all the ingredients examined, the researchers found that participants who took chromium picolinate lost the least amount of lean body mass while still significantly reducing fat mass, when compared with the other ingredients.


Researchers from Baylor University in Texas led the study. It was published on December 3, 2018, in Nutrients.
