Combination Found to Aid Weight Loss in Women

Previous research has found that calcium helps decrease body fat, magnesium helps suppress development of metabolic syndrome and lactulose increases absorption of both calcium and magnesium. A recent study found that a supplement containing all three may help reduce body fat mass in women.

Participants in the study included 76 women middle-aged Japanese women. For 12 months, half of them took a supplement containing 300 mg of calcium, 150 mg of magnesium and 4.0 g lactulose. The other half took a placebo.

At the 6 month mark, the researchers did not note any difference in body mass. However, at the 12 month mark, the supplement group lost an average of 2 lbs. of body mass compared with the placebo group. Body fat percentage at 12 months was also lower in the supplement group, but the difference was not statistically significant.

The researchers were not able to determine how magnesium and lactulose contributed to reduction in body fat mass. They plan to conduct further studies to identify how they enhance the body fat reducing effects of calcium.

Researchers from Kagawa Nutrition University and Bunkyo Gakuin University in Japan conducted the study. It was published in the December 2013 issue of the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Previous studies suggest calcium intake may also help with skin health, and reducing the risk of stroke.
Calcium absorption decreases as we age, so it is especially important to make sure you are getting enough of it. Try adding more dairy products or start taking a high quality supplement if you’re trying to increase your calcium intake.
