Combination of Medicinal Herbs May Help Relieve Menopause Symptoms
Common symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, and irritability. A new study has found that a combination of 4 medicinal herbs may help improve menopausal symptoms.
Participants in the study included 110 postmenopausal women between the ages of 45 and 60. Half were given a supplement containing 100 mg of isoflavones, 520 mg of black cohosh, 400 mg of chasteberry, and 500 mg of primrose oil daily for 12 weeks. The other half were given a placebo.
Menopause symptoms were evaluated at baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks using the menopause rating scale quality of life questionnaire. Blood samples were used to measure levels of C-reactive protein, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides.
Participants in the supplement group saw statistically significant reductions in hot flashes, sweating, sleep problems, and irritability compared to the placebo group. They also saw significant decreases in levels of C-reactive protein, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides compared to baseline.
The study was conducted by researchers from Dhurakij Pundit University. It was published in the Volume 19, 2022 issue of the Journal of Dietary Supplements.
A previous study found that ashwagandha may help relieve some perimenopause symptoms.
