Combination Supplement May Help Those With Knee Discomfort
TamaFlex is a supplement that contains tamarind seed extract and turmeric extract. Previous research found that TamaFlex helped support joint flexibility and function in healthy people. Now a recent study has found that TamaFlex may help relieve knee discomfort and improve function in people with knee discomfort – and help protect cartilage.
Ninety adults with mild to moderate knee discomfort participated in the study. They were given 250 mg of TamaFlex, 300 mg of TamaFlex, or a placebo daily for 56 days. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) score was used to evaluate knee discomfort at baseline and at the end of the study. Knee function was also evaluated at baseline and at the end of the study. In addition, the researchers measured levels of a biomarker of cartilage breakdown.
Participants in both TamaFlex groups saw significant improvements in their WOMAC score from baseline compared to the placebo group. They also saw significant improvements in functional scores, knee discomfort, and collagen breakdown biomarkers. On top of this, those taking TamaFlex experienced significant improvements in joint function in walking and stair climbing tests.
The study was conducted by researchers from Government Medical College and General Hospital. It was published online ahead of print on January 19, 2022 in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
