Combination Supplement May Help Relieve Stress
Chronic stress, or a constant stress experienced over a prolonged period, can have negative health effects including increased risk of heart problems, high blood pressure, sleep problems, and mental health issues. A new study has found that supplementation with magnesium, B vitamins, rhodiola extract, and green tea extract may help relieve stress.
One hundred chronically stressed adults participated in the study. Half were given a supplement containing 150 mg of magnesium, 0.7 mg of vitamin B6, 0.1 mg of vitamin B9, 222mg of rhodiola extract, and 125 mg of green tea extract for 28 days. The other half were given a placebo.
Participants completed the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale at baseline and at the end of the study period.
Participants in the supplement group saw significant decreases in stress levels compared to the placebo group. 87.5% of participants in the supplement group went from extremely stressed at baseline to mildly stressed at the end of the study period, compared to 50% in the placebo group. They also saw improvements in daytime dysfunction due to sleepiness.
The study was conducted by researchers from the Plateforme d’Investigation Clinique CHU. It was published online ahead of print on April 29, 2022 in the journal Nutrients.
Probiotic supplementation was found to help reduce stress in a previous study.
