Combination Supplement May Help Support Liver Health
Elevated liver enzymes often indicate inflammation or damage to cells in the liver. According to a new study, a supplement containing bitter melon, gale of wind, green chiretta, field mustard, ginger, and shatavari may help support healthy liver enzyme levels.
60 adults with mild to moderate liver dysfunction participated in the study. They took the combination supplement or a placebo twice daily for 56 days. Blood and urine samples were used to evaluate liver enzyme levels at baseline and at the end of the study period.
Participants in the supplement group saw significant reductions in liver enzyme levels. Specifically, they saw a 40 % reduction in alanine aminotransferase, a 53% reduction in aspartate aminotransferase, a 20% reduction in alkaline phosphatase, and a 20% reduction in bilirubin. They also saw a 20% increase in a biomarker that combats oxidative stress.
The study was conducted by researchers from Andhra Medical College. It was published in the October 2021 edition of the International Journal of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology.
