Combination Supplement May Help With Weight Management

Tongkat ali is a shrubby evergreen tree that is native to Southeast Asia. It contains compounds that may help the body use energy more efficiently. According to a new study, supplementation with a combination of tongkat ali and Bergamot orange may help reduce body mass index (BMI).

97 obese adults participated in the study. They received 400 mg of tongkat ali and Bergamot orange, 200 mg of tongkat ali and Bergamot orange, or a placebo daily for 112 days. The researchers evaluated BMI and body fat percentage at baseline and at the end of the study period.

Participants in the 400 mg dose group saw a 3.3% reduction in BMI at the end of the study period. Participants in the 200 mg dose group saw a 3.2% reduction in BMI. No significant changes were seen in the placebo group.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Universidad Austral de Chile. It was published online ahead of print on November 18, 2021 in the journal Phytotherapy Research.
