Combination Supplement May Provide Blood Sugar Health Benefits and Reduce Fatigue
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a coenzyme that occurs naturally in the body and plays a role in the chemical process that generates energy. According to a new study, supplementation with nicotinamide and ribose may help increase NAD levels, provide blood sugar health benefits, and reduce physical fatigue.
For their study, the researchers recruited 18 healthy, active adults with an average age of 50. They received 1280 mg of D-ribose and 240 mg of nicotinamide or a placebo twice daily for 8 days. Blood samples were taken at baseline and at the end of the study period to measure levels of NAD, cortisol, and glutathione.
Blood glucose and insulin response to a standardized meal was evaluated at baseline and at the end of the study period. The Checklist Individual Strength questionnaire was administered to evaluate physical fatigue, mental concentration, and physical activities.
Participants in the supplement group saw a steady increase in NAD levels throughout the study period, culminating in a 10% increase at the end of the study. They also saw an 11.6% increase in glutathione levels and significantly lower levels of cortisol. No significant changes were seen in the placebo group.
Participants in the supplement group also saw significant reductions in overall blood glucose with no significant changes in insulin secretion. In addition, they saw greater improvements in physical fatigue, mental concentration, and physical activities compared to the placebo group.
The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Seattle and Texas Southern University. It was published online ahead of print on May 26, 2022 in the journal Nutrients.
