CoQ10 May Help People With Metabolic Syndrome Manage Blood Sugar
Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that raise the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and other diseases. These risk factors include central obesity, hypertension, and disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism. A recent study suggests that a daily supplement of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may help people with metabolic syndrome manage their insulin levels.
Participants in the study included 60 overweight or obese people with metabolic syndrome between the ages of 40 and 85. Over the course of eight weeks, they were given either 100 mg of CoQ10 or a placebo daily. Fasting blood samples were taken at the beginning of the study and at the end of the 8-week supplementation period.
At the conclusion of the study, the CoQ10 group had significant improvements in insulin levels, HOMA-IR, and HOMA-B —which are measures of insulin resistance — as well as improved levels of glutathione and lower levels of malondialdehyde. Malondialdehyde is a marker of oxidative stress.
The researchers did not note any changes in fasting blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, or markers of inflammation.
Researchers from Kashan University of Medical Sciences in Iran conducted the study. It was published in the December 2016 issue of the European Journal of Nutrition.
