Curcuminoids May Help Support Oral Health
Tetrahydrocurcuminoids CG (THC) are active metabolites and antioxidant substances derived from turmeric. A new study has found that supplementation with curcuminoids in the form of THC may help alleviate symptoms associated with canker sores and gingivitis.
Participants in the study included 30 adults with canker sores and 29 adults with gingivitis symptoms. They consumed 100 mg of THC twice daily for 21 days. The researchers assessed Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain scores, canker sore lesions, gingival appearance, inflammation and bleeding at baseline, day 14, and day 21.
Participants with canker sores saw reductions of at least 50% by day 14 in difficulty chewing and swallowing, reddening at the site of the canker sore, and VAS pain scores. At the end of the study period, single and multiple canker sore lesions were healed.
Participants with gingivitis symptoms saw significant reductions in gingival appearance, bleeding, and inflammation. Improvements were seen by day 14 and continued through the end of the study period.
