Eating Breakfast Regularly May Help With Weight Maintenance
Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day because it replenishes the body’s supply of glucose to boost energy levels and alertness. According to a new study, daily consumption of breakfast may also help with weight maintenance.
Participants in the study included 65,099 women who took part in the Mexican Teachers Cohort study. Participants reported how often they ate breakfast at the beginning of the study. Body weight was evaluated at baseline and 3 years later.
Approximately 19% of the participants gained more than 11 pounds during the study period. The prevalence of gaining more than 11 pounds was 7% lower in participants who ate breakfast every day compared to those who never ate breakfast. The association was strongest (13% lower) among participants who were of normal weight at the beginning of the study.
The study was conducted by researchers from the National Institute of Public Health, Mexico. It was published online ahead of print on December 31, 2020 in The Journal of Nutrition.
