Eggshell Membrane May Help Relieve Knee Discomfort
Eggshell membranes, the thin film lining the insides of eggshells, are sources of collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid. According to a new study, eggshell membrane may help relieve knee discomfort.
Participants in the study included 75 adults with knee osteoarthritis and chronic knee discomfort. They were given 300 mg of eggshell membrane, 500 mg of eggshell membrane, or a placebo daily for 8 weeks. The researchers evaluated knee discomfort at baseline and after 8 weeks using a visual analog scale. They also evaluated quadricep muscle strength, knee functional ability, and quality of sleep.
Both supplement groups reported a significant decrease in pain perception compared to the placebo group. The decrease was highest in the 500 mg group. The 500 mg group also saw significant increase in muscle strength and improvements in sleep quality compared to the 300 mg and placebo groups.
The study was conducted by researchers from the Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia. It was published online ahead of print on June 3, 2022 in the journal Nutrients
In a previous study, curcumin was found to help relieve knee joint discomfort.
