Eggshell Membrane Supplements May Help Relieve Chronic Joint Pain

A recent study suggests that taking a water-soluble eggshell membrane supplement may improve joint function and increase comfort in daily activities as well as elevate physical activity in people experiencing chronic pain.

Participants in the study included 25 people with BMIs ranging from 29 to the low to mid 30s. Fifteen of the participants were women and 10 were men. The women were, on average, in their early to mid 50s, while the men were in their late 40s.

The participants were given 450 mg of an eggshell membrane supplement for four weeks, followed by a four-week washout period, and then a four week placebo period. The researchers measured range of motion, pain at rest, and pain when the participants were physically active.

Supplementation with the eggshell membrane supplement was associated with improved range of motion in the neck, spine, hips, and knees. Range of motion for the neck and right knee were also found to be significantly improved with the supplement when compared with the placebo. Both physical activity and daily physical functioning were also improved in the supplement group. Additionally, subgroup analysis showed rapid improvement of lower back pain after only five days of taking the supplement.

Researchers from NIS Labs in Klamath, Oregon, conducted the study. It was published on September 18, 2015, in the Journal of Medicinal Food.

Previous studies suggest that eggshell membrane may have skin health benefits and could possibly provide relief from arthritis pain. If you’re looking for the benefits seen in this study, your best bet is to take a daily supplement that contains eggshell membranes.
