EPA-Rich Fish Oil May Help Improve Accuracy and Memory
Fish oil supplements contain the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. According to new study, fish oil supplements that contain a large amount of EPA may help improve accuracy and memory.
Participants in the study included 310 adults with an average age of 37. They were given fish oil containing 900 mg of DHA and 270 mg of EPA, fish oil containing 360 mg of DHA and 900 mg of EPA, or a placebo daily for 26 weeks. Overall cognitive performance, memory, accuracy, and speed were evaluated at the beginning and end of the study.
Participants in the EPA-rich fish oil group performed significantly better for overall accuracy compared to the DHA-rich and placebo groups. They also performed better than the DHA-rich group for accuracy of memory.
The study was conducted by researchers from Northumbria University and Southampton University. It was published online ahead of print on June 10, 2021 in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
