Fenugreek Extract May be a Natural Female Libido Booster

Loss of sexual desire affects approximately one in every four women, but at present there are few supplement options available. A recent study has found that daily supplements of Fenugreek extract may help enhance female libido.

Participants in the study included 80 women between the ages of 20 and 49 who self-reported low sex drive. Over the course of eight weeks (or two menstrual cycles), the women were given either 600 mg/day of the Fenugreek extract or a placebo. The researchers measured sexual function via the Derogatis Interview for Sexual Functioning and Female Function Index questionnaires.

At the conclusion of the study, the researchers noted significant increases in Estradiol and free testosterone as well as increased sexual desire and arousal in the Fenugreek group, when compared with the placebo. The Fenugreek group also had significantly increased sexual activity, sexual drive, vaginal lubrication, and vaginal blood flow.

The researchers did note a significant placebo response but those results did not negate the benefits seen in the Fenugreek group.

Researchers from the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland, the University of Southern Queensland, Integrated Health Group Pty Ltd, and Medlab Pty Ltd conducted the study. It was published online ahead of print on April 24, 2015, in Phytotherapy Research.

Previous studies have found a correlation between fenugreek seed extract and digestive health, improved heart health, and lowering high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

Because fenugreek has a sweet taste that some say is similar to maple syrup it can be added directly to food. It can also be ingested as a supplement.
