Fenugreek May Help Improve Testosterone Levels and Alertness in Men
Fenugreek is a clover-like herb native to the Mediterranean region, southern Europe, and western Asia. Its seeds, which smell and taste like maple syrup, have been used in cooking and as traditional medicine for centuries. A new study has found that fenugreek may help improve testosterone levels, fertility, and mental alertness in men.
One hundred men with an average age of 47 participated in the study. They received 500 mg of fenugreek or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. The researchers assessed testosterone levels, sperm count, sperm motility, mental alertness, mood, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels at baseline, week 4, week 8, and week 12.
Participants in the fenugreek group saw a 1.73-fold increase in free testosterone levels and a 1.28-fold increase in total testosterone levels. They also saw significant increases in sperm count and sperm motility and significant improvements in mental alertness and mood. In addition, they saw significant decreases in total cholesterol levels and systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
The study was conducted by researchers from King George’s Medical University. It was published online ahead of print on October 25, 2021 in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.
