Fish Oil Supplementation May Help Protect Cognitive Health
Omega-3s help support brain health by maintaining proper blood flow in the brain. A new study suggests that supplementation with omega-3 rich fish oil may help protect against age-related mental decline.
Participants included 215,083 adults with an average age of 64. All had healthy cognitive function at the beginning of the study. Questionnaires were used to evaluate fish oil use and dietary intake. Participants were followed for an average of 8 years and all incidences of age-related cognitive decline were recorded.
The researchers found that fish oil supplementation was significantly protective against age-related cognitive decline.
The study was conducted by researchers from the Zhejiang University School of Medicine. It was published online ahead of print on January 11, 2022 in the journal Clinical Nutrition.
A previous study linked higher blood serum levels of omega-3s to better brain function in mature adults.
