Golden Tomato Extract May Help Improve Skin Health
The human skin is exposed to various sources of oxidative stress including ultraviolet light, ozone, and other air pollutants. This exposure ages the skin and results in wrinkles, reduced elasticity, and rough texture. A recent study has found that a golden tomato extract may help improve skin health.
Participants in the study included 66 women with an average age of 51. They were given a supplement 110 mg of golden tomato extract containing 10% tomato carotenoids or a placebo daily for 16 weeks. The researchers evaluated skin smoothness, skin hydration, skin texture, pore size, and trans-epidermal water loss at baseline, week 4, week 8, week 12, and week 16.
Participants in the golden tomato group saw improvements in skin hydration and skin smoothness. They also saw reductions in pore size and redness of skin texture. Participants in the golden tomato extract group who had high levels of trans-epidermal water loss at baseline saw a 21 to 53% improvement at the end of the study period.
The study was conducted by researchers from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. It was published online ahead of print on October 21, 2021 in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
