Green Tea and Capsaicin May Help With Weight Loss

Green tea, caffeine, and capsaicin are all popular weight loss ingredients. A recent study examined the weight loss potential of all three and found that capsaicin and green tea supplements may help with weight management.

For their analysis, researchers examined data from 29 placebo-controlled studies that examined the effects of green tea, caffeine, and capsaicin on obese adults. Only studies that used green tea extract rather than isolated elements of the tea were included. The studies looked at a variety of measurements, including weight gain, body composition changes, fat mass changes, and changes in body mass index.

The researchers found that green tea significantly reduced weight, body mass index, and waist circumference, but had no effect on percent of body fat. Capsaicin had a significant effect on weight loss. No effect on weight was observed for caffeine.

Researchers from Tehran University of Medical Sciences conducted the study. It was published in the July 2018 issue of Journal of Functional Foods.

Capsaicin is the compound that makes chiles spicy. Capsicum extract is created from capsicum peppers and provides the health benefits of the peppers without the burning sensation that usually accompanies raw peppers.
