Healthy Plant-Based Diet Associated With Lower Risk of Diabetes

Plant-based diets are mainly comprised of foods derived from plants, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans. A recent study has found that consuming a healthy plant-based diet may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Researchers from Harvard University used data from the Nurses' Health Study, the Nurses' Health Study II, and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. The data included 10,684 participants with an average age of 54. They were followed for approximately 30 years. Participants completed food frequency questionnaires used to determine adherence to a healthy plant-based diet. Plant foods were classified as healthy or unhealthy depending on their association with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and high blood pressure.

The researchers found that participants with a lower intake of healthy plant-based foods had a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those with a higher intake. Plant-based foods identified as healthy included fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, tea, and coffee. Unhealthy plant-based foods included refined grains, foods high in sugar, juices, sweetened beverages, French fries, and sweets.

The study was published online ahead of print on April 8, 2022 in the journal Diabetologia.

A higher consumption of flavonoid-rich foods may also help reduce the risk of diabetes.
