High Body Fat Mass Associated With Lower Bone Mineral Density

Body fat mass is the actual weight of fat in your body. The healthy range of body fat for men is typically defined as 8-19%, while the healthy range for women is 21-33%. A recent study has found that that men with high levels of body fat may have lower bone density.

Participants in the study included 10,814 adults between the ages of 20 and 59. Bone mineral density, lean mass index, and fat mass index were evaluated for all participants.

The researchers found that high body fat mass with associated with lower bone mineral density. This association was especially strong in men. They also found a positive association between lean fat mass and higher bone mineral density in both men and women.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Chicago. It was published online ahead of print on February 10, 2022 in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

A recent study found that dried prunes may provide bone health benefits for men.
