High Levels of Vitamin D Associated With Lower Risk of Cardiovascular Events
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. A recent study suggests that having higher blood levels of vitamin D is associated with significantly fewer cardiovascular events and a lower risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease.
For their analysis, researchers examined data on 180,667 people. In that sample, there were 9,170 deaths from cardiovascular disease, 7,074 cases of ischemic heart disease or myocardial infarction, 3,127 strokes, and 3,037 cases of heart failure.
After examining the data, the researchers found that every 10 ng/mL increase in blood levels of vitamin D was associated with a 10% decrease in the risk of a cardiovascular event as well as a 12% decrease in risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.
Researchers from Beijing Tiantan Hospital led the study. It was published online ahead of print on March 1, 2017, in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Previous studies have associated vitamin D with improved lipid profiles in diabetics, lower risk of asthma and allergies in children, reducing the risk of skin damage, reducing the risk of osteoporosis, combating diabetes, lower risk of cognitive decline, and improving age-related macular degeneration.
