Hydrangea Leaf Extract Found to Help Improve Skin Health

The hydrangea plant is rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, sulfur and phosphorus. A recent study suggests that hydrangea leaf extract may help improve skin health, including wrinkles, texture, elasticity, and hydration.

One hundred and fifty people took part in the study. They were given 300 mg of hydrangea leaf extract, 600 mg of hydrangea leaf extract, or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. Wrinkles, hydration, elasticity, texture, and roughness were evaluated at baseline, week 4, week 8, and week 12.

Participants in both hydrangea leaf groups saw significant reductions in crow’s feet around the eyes at weeks 8 and 12 compared to the placebo group. They also saw significant improvement in skin hydration and changes in skin texture and roughness were significantly reduced. Participants in the 600 mg hydrangea leaf group saw significant improvements in skin elasticity, including overall elasticity, net elasticity, and ratio of elastic recovery to total deformation.

The study was conducted by researchers from Kyung Hee University. It was published online ahead of print on May 28, 2020 in the journal Nutrients.
