Krill Oil May Help Support Power Training Athletes

Krill oil is a natural source of omega-3s and choline, an essential nutrient that helps support muscle movement and performance. Choline tends to decrease during high endurance workouts. A recent study has found that supplementation with krill oil may help increase choline and omega-3 concentrations following power training.

For their study, the researchers recruited 35 power training athletes. They were given 2.5 grams of krill oil that contained 550 mg of EPA and DHA and 150 mg of choline or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. Omewg-3 and choline concentrations were measured at baseline and at the end of the study period. Antioxidant capacity was evaluated after completion of a power training exercise.

Participants in the krill oil group saw a significant increase in the omega-3 index from 4.82 to 6.77% and a reduction in the omega-6: omega-3 index from 50.72 to 13.61%. They also saw a higher recovery of choline concentration after exercise compared to the placebo group. In addition, they had an 8% decrease in total antioxidant capacity post-exercise, compared to a 21% decrease in the placebo group.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Barcelona. It was published online ahead of print on November 25, 2021 in the journal Nutrients.

A previous study found that krill oil may help promote healthy triglyceride levels.
