Lemon Verbena May Help Improve Sleep Quality

Lemon verbena is a flowering plant native to South America. The leaves have a very high polyphenol content and are rich in vitamin C. A new study has found that lemon verbena may help improve sleep quality and reduce perceptions of stress.

Participants in the study included 40 adults with an average age of 38. They were given 400 mg of lemon verbena extract or a placebo 1-2 hours before bedtime daily for 2 months. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to evaluated sleep quality and the perceived stress scale questionnaire to evaluate stress. Fitbit trackers were worn to monitor sleep.

Participants in the lemon verbena group saw a 26% reduction in their Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores, which represents a significant improvement in sleep quality. The largest improvement was seen in female participants. Participants in this group also saw a significant reduction in times awakened during the night and increases in time spent in deep sleep and REM.

Participants in the supplement group reported significantly reduced perceptions of stress. They also saw a 15.6% decrease in cortisol levels.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Alicante. It was published online ahead of print on January 4, 2022 in the journal Nutrients.

Black cumin oil was found to help improve sleep quality in a previous study.
