Oat Beta Glucan May Help Improve LDL Cholesterol Levels
Oat beta glucan is a natural soluble fiber. A recent study has found that consuming high molecular weight oat beta glucan may help improve LDL cholesterol levels.
One hundred and ninety-one adults with LDL cholesterol levels between 115 and 190 mg/dl participated in the study (optimal LDL cholesterol levels are below 100 mg/dl). They consumed 1 gram of high molecular oat beta glucan mixed with water 3 times per day or a placebo for 4 weeks. LDL cholesterol levels and cardiovascular disease risk were evaluated at baseline and at the end of the study period.
Participants in the oat beta glucan group saw a 6% reduction in LDL cholesterol levels. They also saw an 8% reduction in cardiovascular disease risk. No changes were seen in the placebo group.
The study was conducted by researchers from INQUIS Clinical Research. It was published online ahead of print on June 3, 2021, in The Journal of Nutrition.
