Hyaluronic Acid Supplement May Help Improve Skin Health
As we age, our skin becomes thinner and more fragile, and we lose some of the skin’s protective fat layer. Our skin also becomes rougher, looser, and prone to wrinkles. A new study has found that oral supplementation with hyaluronic acid may help improve skin health and reduce wrinkles.
Participants in the study included 40 adults between the ages of 35 and 64. They were given a supplement containing 120 mg of hyaluronic acid or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. The researchers evaluated skin hydration, skin elasticity, skin structure, and degree of wrinkling at baseline and at the end of the study period.
Participants in the hyaluronic acid group had significantly higher levels of skin hydration at the end of the study compared to the placebo group. They also saw significant improvements in skin elasticity in the forehead, waist, and arms. In addition, they saw a greater reduction in wrinkles compared to the placebo group.
The study was conducted by researchers from Hung Kuang University,. It was published online ahead of print on June 28, 2021, in the journal Nutrients.
