Orange Juice May Improve Cholesterol Levels

Drinking concentrated orange juice may help reduce cholesterol levels according to a study published recently in the October 2010 issue of the journal Nutrition Research.

The type of orange juice used in this study is known as concentrated orange juice and it has higher levels of beneficial flavonoids compared to fresh squeezed orange juice. This abundance of flavonoids is due to the fact that the entire fruit is used when making the juice, which means the essential oils and compounds found in the peel are present in the end product.

62 people were recruited for the study. Researchers from Sao Paulo State University in Brazil had 54 of them consume 25 ounces per day of the concentrated orange juice for 60 days. They were then compared to the 8 control subjects who did not consume any orange juice for 60 days.

After six weeks, participants with high cholesterol who consumed the orange juice saw a decrease in LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. This is attributed to the observed increase in the transfer of free cholesterol to HDL, rather than LDL

These findings show a clear association between regular orange juice consumption and improvements in cholesterol levels, giving yet another reason to drink your daily glass of OJ.

Orange juice is also high in vitamin C, folate and potassium. All of these beneficial nutrients combined with its high level of antioxidants make orange juice effective for boosting the immune system, decreasing the risk of heart disease and possibly reducing the risk of certain cancers.
