Probiotic Combination May Boost Immunity in Asthmatics

A recent study suggests that a combination of the probiotics Lactobacillus salivarius LS01 and Bifidobacterium breve BR03 may boost the immune systems of people with asthma. They were also found to lower the production of pro-inflammatory compounds by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), which are cells that are important for the immune system.

For this study, the researchers cultured the two probiotics in a broth together to test their compatibility. No inhibition of either strain was found. They then performed antimicrobial tests on the probiotic strains. All of the pathogens were found to be somewhat inhibited by L. salivarius LS01 alone or with B. breve BR03 but not by B. breve BR03 by itself.

The researchers then took blood samples from people with allergic asthma and measured cytokine production in the PBMCs. They found that the combination of the two strains lowered the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines by the PBMCs. Additionally, they noted an “intense increase” in the production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10. Interleukin-10 is a powerful inhibitor of proinflammatory cytokines.

Researchers from the University of Milan and the IRCCS Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute in Milan conducted the study. It was published online ahead of print on March 18, 2015, in Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research.

While probiotics are most commonly associated with improving digestion and gut health, they have also been shown to have other health benefits, including strengthening the immune system and reducing the risk of chronic disease.

Probiotics can be found naturally in many foods, such as yogurt, milk and sauerkraut. You may also consider taking a high quality supplement but make sure it is packaged to block light, air and moisture, which can easily kill probiotics.
