Probiotic May Help Gas and Bloating
Many adults struggle with gastrointestinal challenges such as occasional gas, bloating, burping. A new study has found that daily supplementation with a probiotic may help alleviate gas-related gastrointestinal discomfort.
For their study, the researchers enrolled 76 adults with at least minimal complaints of abdominal bloating, burping, or flatulence. They received 2 billion CFUs of the probiotic Bacillus subtilis BS50 or a placebo daily for 6 weeks. Participants recorded gastrointestinal symptoms and stool frequency and consistency daily.
At the end of the study, 47.4% of participants in the probiotic group saw improvements in bloating, burping, and flatulence compared to 22.2% of participants in the placebo group. No significant changes were seen in bowel movements.
The study was conducted by researchers from BIO-CAT Microbials. It was published online ahead of print on October 21, 2022 in the journal Gut Microbes.
A multi-strain probiotic was found to provide gastrointestinal benefits in a previous study.
