Probiotic May Help Improve Mood and Sleep
Lactobacillus plantarum is a probiotic that is commonly found in fermented foods. A new study has found that Lactobacillus plantarum may help improve mood and sleep quality.
Forty adults with self-reported insomnia participated in the study. They were given 6 billion CFUs of Lactobacillus plantarum PS128 or a placebo daily for 30 days. The researchers evaluated subjective depressive symptoms, anxiety, insomnia, and sleep quality at baseline, day 15, and day 30. Participants wore a patch that measured their sleep-wake cycle.
Participants in the probiotic group saw significant decreases in depressive symptoms and feelings of fatigue. They also experienced less frequent awakening and arousal during the deep sleep stage.
The study was conducted by researchers from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. It was published online ahead of print on August 17, 2021 in the journal Nutrients.
