Probiotic May Help Reduce Feelings of Stress

Chronic feelings of stress can negatively affect health, and increase risk of mood and stress related disorders. A new study has found that supplementation with a specific probiotic strain may help reduce perceived feelings of stress and improve sleep quality in people experiencing stress.

Participants in the study included 120 adults with an average age of 33. Half of them were given 17.5 billion colony forming units (CRUs) of the probiotic Lacticaseibacillus paracasei Lpc-37 (Lpc-37) daily for 5 weeks. The other half were given a placebo. The researchers measured participants feelings of stress, anxiety, emotional insecurity, and their overall mood, health and well-being.

In general, participants in the probiotic group saw a significant reduction in perceived stress compared to the placebo group. Depending on stress levels and gender, certain participants taking Lpc-37 appeared to experience a reduction in feelings of exhaustion, and improvements in mental well-being, perceived health and sleep quality.

 The study was conducted by researchers from DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences.It was published online ahead of print on November 24, 2020 in the Neurobiology of Stress.
