Probiotic Supplement May Aid Weight Loss

People who are obese are at an increased risk of many health conditions and disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and sleep apnea. A recent study suggests that taking a probiotic supplement with various strains of Lactobacillus may help obese and overweight people lose weight.


For their analysis, researchers chose 15 studies that examined the effects of probiotic supplementation on body weight, body mass index, and fat percentage in an intervention group, when compared with a placebo. The studies were between three and 12 weeks long and all except three used Lactobacillus. The researchers did not find any difference between the Lactobacillus studies and the ones that did not include Lactobacillus.


The researchers conducted weighted mean difference calculations to determine the effect of supplementation on body weight, body mass index, and fat percentage. They found that probiotic supplementation of 12 weeks or less was associated with significantly larger reduction in body weight, BMI, and fat percentages. The reductions, however, were small.


Researchers from Vestfold Hospital in Norway led the study. It was published online ahead of print on October 18, 2017, in Obesity Reviews.


While probiotics are most commonly linked to improving digestion and gut health, they have also been shown to been shown to help the body in numerous other ways.


Probiotics can be found naturally in many foods, such as yogurt, milk and sauerkraut. You may also consider taking a high quality supplement but make sure it is packaged to block light, air and moisture, which can easily kill probiotics.
