Probiotics Found in Kimchi May Help With Weight Management
Kimchi is a traditional Korean food made by fermenting vegetables with probiotic lactic acid bacteria. A new study has found that supplementation with probiotics from kimchi may help with weight management.
Participants in the study included 72 overweight, healthy adults. They were given 1 billion CFU’s of the probiotics L. curvatus HY7601 and L. plantarum KY1032 or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. The researchers measured body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and body fat mass at baseline, week 6, and week 12.
Participants in the probiotic group saw an average decrease in body weight of 1 pound, compared to an average increase of 2 pounds in the placebo group. They also saw a decrease in waist circumference and body fat mass, while participants in the placebo group saw increases in both.
In addition, participants in the probiotic group saw a decrease in visceral body fat mass and an increase in the appetite suppressing hormone adiponectin.
The study was conducted by researchers from Vievis Namuh Hospital. It was published online ahead of print on June 15, 2022 in the journal Nutrients.
Sicilian blood orange was found to help with weight management in a previous study.
