Proper Hydration May Provide Heart Health Benefits

Drinking enough water to stay properly hydrated each day is important for many reasons including regulating body temperature, keeping joints lubricated, preventing infections, and keeping organs functioning properly, A recent study suggests that maintaining adequate hydration may help reduce the risk of heart failure.

Researchers from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute used data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study for their study. The data came from 11,814 adults with an average age of 55 at the beginning of the study. Participants were followed for an average of 25 years and hydration was assessed periodically throughout the follow-up period by measuring serum sodium levels.

Participants with high serum sodium levels were found to have a 39% increased risk of heart failure compared to those with sodium levels in the normal range (135-146 mEq/L). They also had an 80% increased risk of enlargement and thickening of the heart.

The study was published online ahead of print on March 29, 2022 in the European Heart Journal.

A previous study found that higher selenium intake may help reduce the risk of heart disease.
