Q&A - 10-06

Q: TrueOmega-3® contains a "Homocysteine Lowering Complex." What is homocysteine and why is lowering it important?
Dr. Perry Homocysteine is a sulfur containing amino acid found in the blood. It is a toxic byproduct of normal human metabolism. Elevated levels of homocysteine have been linked to increased cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, stroke and declined brain function. The decline in cognitive health often results in dementia, Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.

Homocysteine converts cholesterol into a much more damaging molecule that attacks your artery walls, clogging them with fatty acids and making them less flexible. This puts you at a greater risk for heart attacks and stroke.

The way homocysteine impairs cognitive performance is not yet clear. But study after study has been able to associate higher levels of homocysteine with declining memory recall, decreased ability to process information, and depression.

Researchers have not identified a safe level of this amino acid, so your goal should be to minimize it as much as possible. The official medical guidance designates the "normal" range to be between 5 and 15 micromoles per liter (µmol/L). High risk individuals have a homocysteine level exceeding 100µmol/L.

Several of the B vitamins have been shown to break down harmful homocysteine. Getting enough of these vitamins is an easy, natural way to keep homocysteine at a reduced level.

Q: What is in the "Homocysteine Lowering Complex" in TrueOmega-3®
Dr. Perry: It is a proven combination of folic acid (vitamin B9), vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and the organic compound trimethylglycine (TMG). Together they work to break down homocysteine existing in the blood. Plus, this nutrient complex blocks the creation of new homocysteine by interrupting the conversion of the amino acid methionine to homocysteine.

The folic acid, B6 and B12 are the principle drivers of the lowering complex. Supplementing with each vitamin separately will reduce homocysteine somewhat, but together studies have indicated they can reduce homocysteine up to 60% over a four to six month period. The TMG is an extra bonus. It works with an enzyme produced by your kidneys and liver to reduce homocysteine in a way the B vitamins can not do by themselves.

TrueOmega-3® is a fantastic formula for supporting heart and brain health. You get the 3-in-1 benefits of Omega-3 rich fish oil certified USP for purity, absorbable CoQ10 and this Homocysteine Lowering Complex. And it's all in one, convenient softgel. I can not recommend this product more strongly!
