Red Chili and Fenugreek May Help Weight Management
A new study has found that a supplement containing capsaicinoids-rich red chili extract and fenugreek may help reduce bodyweight and body mass index (BMI). The supplement is formulated for a sustained release of the capsaicinoids in order to reduce negative digestive side effects.
Twenty-four healthy, overweight adults participated in the study. They were given 200 mg of the chili extract and fenugreek supplement or a placebo daily for 28 days. The researchers measured bodyweight, hip to waist ratio, and BMI at baseline and at the end of the study. They used the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire and the Council of Nutrition Appetite Questionnaire to evaluate eating behavior and appetite.
Participants in the supplement group lost an average 2.1% of bodyweight. They also saw a 4% reduction in waist to hip ratio and a 2.2% reduction in BMI. In addition, they had significantly improved scores in uncontrolled eating and reductions in appetite.
The study was conducted by researchers from Thomas College. It was published online ahead of print on June 24, 2021, in the Journal of Dietary Supplements.
