Resveratrol Shown to Aid Diabetics With Glucose Control and Insulin Sensitivity

Regulating blood sugar is very important for diabetics. A recent study suggests that taking a daily supplement of resveratrol may help with glucose control and insulin sensitivity in people with diabetes.

The researchers who performed the analysis examined 11 studies that included 388 participants. After analyzing the data, they determined that resveratrol significantly reduced fasting glucose and insulin in diabetics. Additionally, the researchers noted lower levels of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), which is a marker of too much glucose and insulin resistance.

There were no noted effects for non-diabetics.

The researchers believe that the effects noted here are due to the fact that resveratrol has been shown to activate a gene called sirtuin1 (Sirt1), which has an effect on energy restriction and therefore on blood sugar. They also hypothesized that it could be due to an increase in the insulin-dependent glucose transporter GLUT4 or that it may increase glucose uptake when there is a lack of insulin.

Researchers from the Third Military Medical University in China conducted the study. It was published online ahead of print on April 2, 2014, in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Previous studies have shown resveratrol to be a powerful antioxidant with health benefits that include increasing energy levels, improving brain health, reducing the appearance of aging, improving metabolism, and improving liver function.

This antioxidant can be found in red wine, grapes, grape seed extract, and peanuts. A glass of red wine a day can provide a good amount of resveratrol, but excess drinking will reverse the positive health benefits. Another good way to get resveratrol is through a high quality supplement.
