Study Finds Beetroot Gel May Help Improve Muscle Strength Recovery

Beets are rich in natural compounds called nitrates. Through a chain reaction, your body changes nitrates into nitric oxide, which helps with blood flow and blood pressure. A recent study suggests that supplementation with a high-nitrate beetroot-based gel may help improve handgrip strength recovery in athletes.

Fourteen recreational combat sport athletes participated in the study. On two separate occasions, the participants were given 100 grams of beetroot-based gel or a placebo. Maximal forearm muscle isometric strength was measured via a handgrip exercise prior to taking the supplement, and 120 minutes after taking the supplement. Foreman muscles were measured at baseline and 20 minutes after performing the handgrip exercise to measure muscle strength recovery.

The researchers found that beetroot gel supplementation reduced the decline of handgrip strength following a fatiguing exercise and increased muscle strength recovery.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. It was published online ahead of print on February 7, 2020 in the journal Biology of Sport.
